We have a wide selection of Wireless Intruder Alarms (often called Burglar Alarms) & Alarm Accessories to help secure your family, home & business. The systems can be purchased as kits or built to your own specification.
Understanding the principles & terminology of all Wireless Intruder Alarms & Accessories will help you decide which system is best suited to your needs, listed below is a clear description of how they work and what the wide choice of accessories actually do:
Control Panel:
This is the main brains behind any alarm system, it is used to arm & disarm the system (sometimes by a keypad built directly onto it, sometimes by other methods), it receives the signals back from all of the alarm detectors, it is used to carry out most programming functions, and most importantly it operates various accessories (sirens, dialers, etc) when the alarm is activated. Most control panels are powered by a transformer that needs to be plugged into a wall socket (unless external solar powered designs are chosen) and most have built in back up batteries which will keep the system operating throughout power cuts. The control panels generally need to be located within areas of the property that are protected by alarm accessories.
Dialer:
A dialer is a function which will contact keyholders by telephone (some times with your own pre-recorded message) if the alarm is activated, the dialers will need to be connected into existing telephone lines inside the property. Some dialers are built into the alarm control panel, some are seperate but connected to the alarm control panel by cable or wireless signals, there are generally no subsciption costs. Dialers can contact various keyholders (depending on the chosen model) and will also try each number multiple times, they can be switched off remotely by keyholders or at the control panel.
GSM:
A GSM module works in a similar way to a dialer, but rather than connecting into a telephone line, a mobile phone sim card (contract or pay as you go) is used. The main benifit of the GSM models is that no telephone line is required and the keyholders will have more options in remote access (often being able to remotely arm, disarm and monitor the control panel).
External Siren & Control Panel:
These are external sirens which also replace the control panel inside the house, the detectors are programmed directly to the siren, the siren is armed and disarmed using remote controls, they are normally powered by a built in solar panel. They are limited in operation and have no options to utilize dialers, but are ideal for buildings with no available power.
Remote Control:
These are small hand help units that are used to arm and disarm the control panel from between 20 - 60 metres away (allowing you to hide the control panel away), most remote controls will also have a built in panic button which will allow you to fully activate the alarm in the event of a security or medical emergency.
Internal Sirens:
These are loud sirens located inside the premises, some are built into the control panel, some are connected to the control panel by 2-core cable or a wireless signal (depending on the chosen model). These will make it very uncomfortable for an intruder inside the propertry.
External Sirens:
These are loud weatherproof sirens & strobe lights that are installed to the outside of the property, they can be connected to the control panel by cable or by a wireless signal (depending on the chosen model). Some wireless sirens will need to be plugged into a power supply, whilst others can be maintained by a built in solar panel (depending on the chosen model). The external sirens are best installed to the front of the property, making them visible to neighbours, passing police officers & traffic.
Wireless PIR;s:
Technical description is 'Passive Infrared Detectors', these are battery operated sensors that are normally installed into the corner of a room, they are designed to detect changing infrared heat signals (given off by all mammals). In simple terms they will detect a person (or animal) walking into a room and then send a wireless signal back to the control panel. Not to be used if you have large pets moving around within the room when the alarm is armed.
Wired PIR's:
These are identical to the wireless PIR, but connected to the control panel by cable for both the power supply and alarm signal.
Pet Friendly PIR's:
These are PIR's that are designed to be used when you have pets moving around near the PIR, the PIR's are programmed to ignore animals of a certain size (depending on chosen model). We would however recommend using alternative detectors (if possible), when large active animals are present.
Curtain PIR's:
These are very effective PIR's that have a wide & narrow detection pattern (similar shape to a curtain), ideal for protecting doorways, balconies & bay windows etc.
Wireless Magnetic Contact:
These are battery powered devices that have two parts, one half is installed onto the door/window frame, the other half is fitted to the door/window, when the door/window is closed both sections of the magnetic contact need to be nearly touching. When the door/window is opened the contact will send a signal back to the control panel. Very effective & popular alarm detector as it protects the property before an intruder has entered, it allows the owners to move around inside the property with the alarm armed, and is perfect for locations that have pets. Very simple to install using double side tape and 2 small screws in most applications.
Wireless Vibration Sensors:
These are battery powered sensors that are fixed onto the inside of a window or vulnerable door by double sided tape, if a sudden vibration is detected (though a door/window being forced open or smashed), a signal will be transmitted to the control panel. Ideal for locations at the rear of the property, garages or second floor windows with easy access.
Wireless Window Gratings:
These are battery powered detectors which come in two parts, they are designed to be installed to the outside of a building mounted either side of a window or patio door. Each part will constantly monitor the other, if for any reason the signal between the two is broken a wireless signal will be sent to the control panel. Ideal for patio doors & balconies as the alarm will be activated before an intruder has any time to force entry.
Wireless Smoke Detectors:
Battery powered detectors that will send a signal back to the control panel if smoke is present.
Wireless Water Detectors:
Battery powered detectors designed to send a signal back to the control panel if water is detected, ideal for locations under bathtubs, sinks etc, (popular with apartments above ground level). A useful addition to your security system and investment.
Wireless Keypad:
Some wireless alarm systems have additional seperate keypads available (used to arm and disarm the control panel), very useful when you have multiple users to an alarm system. Some keypads will need to be powered by a plug in transformer, others will be battery powered (depending upon the chosen model). It also allows the control panel to be hidden away for either security or cosmetic reasons, the signal between the keypad and control panel is wireless.
We hope this clear description of components and accessories available to a Wireless Alarm System has helped, most domestic homes or small industrial premises will only need to use just a few of the examples listed above. Also please be aware that you can mix and match the type of detector used in different rooms, some rooms will be better protected with a particular type of PIR, other rooms may need one or two magnetic contacts, these systems are very flexible.
We have noticed over many years, that the most confusing aspect for our customers, when choosing to purchase a Wireless Alarm System is, which one to choose, what type of detectors should be used, and where should the detectors be installed.
If you choose the wrong type of detectors, or install them in the wrong location, you will find the alarm more trouble than it is worth, and quickly stop using it, listed below are some useful tips & advice, which will hopefully help:
The first thing to do, is to understand how a potential intruder (burglar) may think, this will help you to make some decisions about the type & layout of the alarm system you are going to purchase:
RISK & REWARD:
A common thought process that a thief will use:
Risk: What risk are they going to have to take, it they believe the premises is alarmed, the risk will be higher than a premises next door which is not, a few simple guide rules are listed below:
Reward: What will the reward be if they do decide to take the risk, a few simple tips are listed below, if they do not know what could be available to steal, or they do not know where they are located, then the risk is getting higher:
Another Thought Process A Thief May Use:
Hopefully, all the information listed before this tab, has given you more understanding about Wireless Alarm Systems & Accessories, and helped you narrow down the selection of alarms suitable for you:
